Position Parkinson Support Group Facilitator - Programs & Services Department

Description POSITION TITLE:
Support Group Facilitator/Co-Facilitator

GOALS FOR THE ROLE:
This position will work in conjunction with PSSO staff to provide education and support at monthly group meetings to clients living with Parkinson’s, their care partners and family members. The Support Group Facilitator will provide leadership and create a safe and empathetic space for clients to share experiences, ideas, and feelings. This role will also help address challenges, encourage the development of supportive relationships, and provide an overall inclusive atmosphere where people can be themselves.

• Supporting clients through a challenging and life-changing diagnosis
• Making a difference in the lives of people with Parkinson’s and their families
• Providing a safe and inclusive space for clients to be vulnerable in a group setting

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• To act as a representative of Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario
• To facilitate monthly support group, including planning, set-up, refreshments, speakers, and clean-up
• To provide a safe and trusting environment for sharing of information and client anxieties
• To work in collaboration with PSSO staff to ensure the overall needs of clients are being met
• To provide information and resources to clients and families
• To participate in educational opportunities that will encourage professional growth and development
• To encourage clients to participate in annual fundraising and events organized by PSSO
• To adhere to the Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario Volunteer Policies and Procedures
• To complete Support Group Facilitator orientation and training
• To report and update Coordinator of Programs and Services on a monthly basis
• To ensure that program attendance is promptly shared with the Coordinator of Programs & Services

TIME REQUIREMENTS:
• 2-4 hours per month
• Ideally long-term, minimum commitment of one year,
LOCATION:
Location will vary depending on the city/town in Southwestern Ontario, details will be shared with volunteer


SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
• Interest in supporting those directly or indirectly impacted by Parkinson’s
• Ability to empower others and comfortable leading discussions
• Demonstrates sensitivity and compassion with both active listening and communication skills
• Ability to implement personal boundaries and limitations; understanding the scope of responsibility
• Will seek and accept guidance and feedback as appropriate from PSSO staff
• Successful volunteer candidate will be responsible for obtaining a Police Vulnerable Sector Check, the cost will be reimbursed by the organization
ADDITIONAL ASSETS:
• Preferred background in social services, healthcare, or personal/familial experiences with Parkinson’s
• Experience with group facilitation and program delivery

Training Details Every new volunteer will receive an overall organizational volunteer orientation, and this position will receive additional Support Group Facilitator Orientation & Training.

• Independent role, with ongoing support from Coordinator of Programs & Services
