Position Virtual Elementary Newcomer Educational Support Tutor - Online Newcomer Literacy/Homework Support Program

Description Developed to address the needs of newcomer children and youth in Guelph & Wellington County, United for Literacy virtual tutors work 1:1 or 1:2 via Zoom helping with math, science, reading & writing.

In partnership with Immigrant Services Guelph-Wellington, this virtual homework club program will involve 10-12 registered learners paired with an individual tutor who will support them with completing their school assignments as well as provide supplementary literacy and numeracy support. Our spring session will run from the beginning of May until the end of June.

United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College) and Immigrant Services Guelph-Wellington run virtual newcomer homework support programs on Monday afternoons from 5:00pm-6:15pm (learners in grades 2-4) from May 6-June 24 (7 weeks, no program on June 24) and Tuesdays from 5:00pm-6:15pm (learners in grades 5-8) from May 7-June 18 (7 weeks). Volunteers are only asked to support one program/week.

Those who are interested are encouraged to submit a volunteer inquiry form (https://www.unitedforliteracy.ca/volunteer) and a United for Literacy representative will follow up shortly with information about next steps in our volunteer onboarding process.

Training Details Training is provided ; Training is required ; Scheduled training - Mandatory online tutor training to be held over Zoom on Wed. May 1 from 6:00pm-8:30pm or Sun. May 5 from 10:00am-12:30pm. Volunteers only have to attend one of the two training sessions. All volunteers will also be required to also complete a series of online training modules (approx 45 minutes in length) before placement.
Working Conditions Must have access to reliable internet and a Zoom-compatible device (laptop, desktop, tablet)
