Position Therapeutic Recreation Volunteers

Impact Statement Behind every person with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia, there are hundreds of people dedicated to helping. The Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington is dedicated to providing help for people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia and their caregivers in our community. Our dedicated board, staff and volunteers work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
Description We are looking for volunteers to assist our staff leads in fun and interactive therapeutic recreation programs. Volunteers will help with the delivery of a variety of light exercise and mental stimulation activities. Location and times vary.

Minds in Motion

A 6–8-week program designed for persons with mild cognitive impairment and early to mid-stages of dementia and their care partners. An hour of low impact physical activity, followed by an hour of fun and mentally stimulating activities.



Memory Café

A participant-led, 1-hour program focused on creating community and fostering meaningful connections through casual conversation, activities, and a cup of coffee or tea.



The Social

A weekly social group running out of the Kitchener office. The Social is a 3-hour holistic-designed recreational program for individuals in early to mid-stages of dementia. A safe, comfortable and inclusive environment Engaging activities that promote social, mental and emotional well-being.

Training Details Mandatory general orientation for all new volunteer placements

Volunteers will be trained on specific policies and procedures that are relevant to the positions. The required training will be completed prior to beginning. Prior to the online training the volunteer will receive the “Volunteer Manual” and be asked to review it prior to attending their training session.

Ongoing training and support through regular contact with the Program Coordinators.

All volunteers must have a Vulnerable Population Police Background Check completed.

•Fluent in spoken English (CLB level 10+)
