The combination of changing population demographics and food habits, and growing needs for food and energy, is a great challenge for a sustainable society. In addition, with rising food prices more and more people becoming vulnerable to food insecurity, especially, seniors, students, new immigrants and low-income groups. The GreenTech AgriFood & Innovation Canada (GAIC) team has interdisciplinary expertise and works for developing sustainable agri-food systems, improving food security and reducing food waste, food carbon footprint, enterprise development, as well as international development. In addition, the GAIC is versed in life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC), agri-machinery, and industrial system development. Under the ‘Multicultural/Multifaith Food Production’ GAIC is running a community garden (FarmFresh: Pay on your way) in the City of Guelph to reduce food insecurity of vulnerable groups such as seniors, students, new immigrants and low-income people in collaboration with other organizations (Wood Development Group; CP Industries; City of Guelph; Biswas Soil Lab, University of Guelph; Food Uniting Neighbours) for the well being of local communities and to contribute to the sustainable goals of Canada.
